Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control, in Pakistan, and across the globe are observing Kashmir Martyrs’ Day today (Sunday) to honor the sacrifices of the 22 martyrs of July 13, 1931, and all those who laid down their lives in the struggle for Kashmir’s freedom.
According to Kashmir Media Service, a complete shutdown is being observed in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. A symbolic march to the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqashband Sahib in Srinagar is also taking place, where the 22 martyrs of 1931 are buried.
The call for shutdown and march was issued by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and supported by all pro-freedom leaders and organizations. In a statement from Srinagar, APHC urged the public to make the protest successful and to send a clear message to the international community that Kashmiris seek a peaceful solution as per UN resolutions and reject India’s illegal occupation in all forms.
July 13: Kashmir Remembers the 22 Martyrs Who Died Completing the Azaan
Meanwhile, rallies, seminars, and conferences are being held in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, throughout Pakistan, and in the main cities of the world to pay tribute to the Kashmir Martyrs and to highlight the freedom struggle.
The tragedy of July 13, 1931
On the day of 1931, Dogra’s soldiers opened fire against peaceful protesters outside the central prison of Srinagar during an audience against Abdul Qadeer, who had called Kashmiris to rise against the oppressive Dogra regime.
As the call to prayer (Azaan) was given, a young man was martyred. Another took his place – and he was also shot. Twenty-two brave young people laid their lives, one after another, to complete the Azaan moment recorded in the Kashmiri collective memory.
Since then, July 13 has been celebrated as Kashmir Martyrs Day, a solemn reminder of the unquestionable spirit of the Kashmiri people and their commitment to their right to self -self-determination.
